The global UV LED market will reach $1 billion in 2023.

According to the relevant survey data, global LED market revenue in 2008 was only 8% of the total uv light market. Ten years later, in 2018, the proportion is expected to reach 2 percent, even more than three times as many as a decade ago.

In 2008, uv leds were considered a new technology that was seeping into applications such as counterfeit detection and uv curing. At the time, the LED industry focused on visible leds for display applications and expected the rise of general lighting. During this period, the number of UV LED manufacturers increased from 10 in 2008 to 65 in 2018.

"The number of UV LED companies increased from 10 to 65 in a decade," says Pierrick Boulay, technology and market analyst at Yole Development, a French market research and strategy consultancy. Since 2010, several visible LED companies have turned to uv leds for new growth drivers and higher profits.

As a result of enterprise expansion and the entry of more enterprises, the UVA of UV spectrum is the first market area with significant price reduction. The sharp decline in UVA LED prices has further accelerated the adoption of the technology. Yole pointed out, however, the market in uv curing applications (uv leds) 80% of the market income to achieve double-digit growth trend for several years later, the revenue from the overall market began to decline, because of the fierce competition in the market competition have slashed prices. Only companies that can innovate in UVA leds and UV curing are expected to remain profitable.

UVB and UVC parts of the UV spectrum are more difficult to develop in terms of performance. Therefore, UVB and UVC leds require more expensive and time-consuming development, leading to a much higher threshold for new UVB and UVC LED manufacturers. For this reason, the development of the UVB/UVC market is much slower.

Since the UV curing market is beginning to stabilize, Yole predicts that the UV LED industry will also be in a slowdown. In addition, expected delays in the market for ultraviolet (uv) sterilizers are expected. "We expect the UV LED market to grow from $160 million in 2017 to $320 million by 2020," said Pars Mukish, manager of Yole's business division. The market will then be driven by UVC applications, which will grow to $1 billion by 2023.

Yole points out that a large part of the visible light LED industry has turned to UV leds. UV LED manufacturers have different strategies, depending on the wavelength of their target product. While manufacturers continue to focus on device manufacturing, other vendors are starting to integrate vertically into modules and systems.

In addition to UV LED manufacturers, some new entrants (mainly modules and system levels) are also trying to enter the industry. In the pursuit of the ultraviolet lighting market, Yole noted that the only people who were indifferent to the traditional UVC system were the "wait-and-see" attitude.
